Kenna White's late goal lifts Detroit City FC women to first-ever victory

Syd Blomquist closed in on Lansing United’s goalkeeper and, in doing so, opened a new chapter in Detroit City FC women soccer team’s fledgling existence.

The right back forced a turnover, which enabled Kenna White to pounce and fire in the deciding goal in the 83rd minute as DCFC defeated Lansing United, 2-1, Friday in the inaugural United Women’s Soccer Keyworth Showcase, giving the team its first-ever victory.

DCFC advances to play Midwest United in the championship on Sunday. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.

Lilian Lucas (21’) opened Le Rouge’s account with a phenomenal left-footed strike from 25 yards out while Lansing United’s Rachel Philpott (53’) leveled the match with a downward header off a corner kick.

DCFC women’s team was making its home debut without any fans in attendance, notably minus the raucous backing of DCFC’s renowned Northern Guard supporters group. Spectators are not allowed to attend due to the state’s executive order regarding sporting events amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet NGS made its presence felt.

Northern Guard released its trademark smoke by way of a phone app, which enabled the release of a black plume by remote that led to an 5-minute delay.

Midwest United 9, Livonia City FC 0: Stephanie “Stitch” Currie slammed in four goals, including three in a little over a half hour, while Marti Corby added two more in a one-sided affair. Kaema Amachree, Macy Wierenga and Hannah Crum (penalty kick) also scored. Livonia FC plays Lansing United in the third-place match at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
