The Pistons made a big addition Wednesday, but it wasn’t another trade.

The team announced that Big Sean, a Grammy-nominated rapper who grew up in Detroit, will join the organization as creative director of innovation.

As part of the new role, he will “provide creative counsel and strategic guidance on a variety of Pistons off-the-court initiatives.” That includes the design of team merchandise, the in-game experience and co-branded initiatives dealing with the community and social responsibility.

Additionally, Sean’s “Don Life” logo will appear on the Pistons’ practice jerseys.

“Sean is an accomplished artist, philanthropist and entrepreneur. Having spent time with him and his family I know how deeply he cares about the city of Detroit,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a team statement. “We share a common desire to use the power of sports and entertainment to improve our community and make a positive impact on people’s lives. I’m excited to see what we can do working together.”

His organization, the Sean Anderson Foundation, will work with the Pistons to create opportunities and programs in the Detroit area and Big Sean will assist in curating music for in-game entertainment at Little Caesars Arena.

There’s also an agreement to create custom merchandise in collaboration with the Pistons and other creative endeavors.

“Unreal! I’m the CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF THE @detroitpistons! “Creative Director of Inovation”!” Big Sean posted on Instagram. “I got a office in the facility n everything (looking for a intern by the way)! Growing up I knew I either wanted to rap or hoop for the Pistons lol. crazy how life works. I look forward to creatively adding what I can to this iconic franchise!

Pistons chief business officer Mike Zavodsky, who aided with the Brooklyn Nets’ efforts on the business operations side, is bringing some star power to the Pistons’ efforts. This partnership looks to be a big step in upgrading their connection to a younger demographic.

“Big Sean embodies everything the Pistons organization and our D-Up campaign is about – creativity, hard work, and the people of Detroit,” Zavodsky said in the team statement. “Big Sean and the Pistons are both a part of the fabric of Detroit, and we look forward to this partnership reflecting the culture of the city we both call home.”
