Tuesday's high school basketball: Albanese leads Mercy past Blair, Divine Child in OT

With one player from each team scoring more than 40 points, Farmington Hills Mercy survived a scare and stayed undefeated, taking down Dearborn Divine Child with a 79-70 overtime victory Tuesday night.

In two amazing performances, Mercy’s Aizlyn Albanese scored 45 points in the win, while Divine Child’s Kennedy Blair answered with 46, both of them accounting for more than half of their team’s total points.

“It was a hard-fought game… it was a great crowd, great atmosphere for the kids to play, and both teams competed hard,” Mercy head coach Gary Morris said.

Mercy led by 10 points at the end of the third, but Blair stepped up by scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying bucket with 10 seconds left, to send the game into overtime.

But that’s when the sophomore Albanese stepped up, scoring 14 of Mercy’s 16 points in overtime to help her team pull away.

“She’s a gym rat, she played a lot for us last year and has added to her game from a year ago in terms of her offense," Morris said. "She’s very coachable and her teammates are good with getting her open."

Morris also had positive things to say about teammate Maya White, who had 22 in the contest, saying White was a big presence in the post. It was one of those games, Morris said, that fit the cliche of one team having to lose, but he was proud of his team’s effort that they have shown throughout their tough season so far.

“We’ve been challenged and been able to win, tonight was another one of those games… it was different in that we had a nice lead and they came back to tie it, but it was nice to see us respond and pull away in overtime,” said Morris.

Mercy is now 13-0 and 5-0 in the Catholic Central League and will play Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard on Friday, while Divine Child (11-3, 1-3) returns home after three straight road games to face Detroit Country Day. These two teams will face off again Feb. 7, this time on Divine Child’s home court.
