Division 2 final: Portland dominates third quarter to defeat Newaygo


East Lansing – Portland dominated the third quarter of its Division 2 state championship game at the Breslin Center Friday evening, going on to earn a 52-32 victory over Newaygo.

Portland led 9-8 after one, 20-12 at halftime, then used a 22-13 third-quarter run to open up a comfortable 42-25 cushion with Ashley Bower scoring 10 during the quarter and Ava Guilford knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

Bower finished with 20 points and four assists, making 8-of-16 shots while Guilford and Alivia Densmore each scored 12 with Guilford making 3-of-4 3-pointers and grabbing six rebounds.

Emmerson Goodin, Jaylee Long and Anna Brummel each scored eight for Newaygo with Goodin also grabbing nine rebounds.
