Recap: Michigan staves off Rutgers in 3OT with 48-42 win

Game summary

After another disastrous start from first-year starting quarterback Joe Milton, Michigan rallied from a 17-0 deficit to Rutgers behind backup Cade McNamara to escape Piscataway with a 48-42 win in triple-overtime. 

Michigan quarterback Joe Milton announced he was entering the transfer portal last week.

Rutgers ties Michigan in final minute

Rutgers takes over at the 25, trailing 35-27 with 5:07 to go in the fourth.

Noah Vedral hits Bo Melton on first down for a gain of 9. Isaih Pacheco rushes for 6 yards on the next play.

Shameen Jones hauls in an 11-yard pass on the next play, going down at the Michigan 49 for a first down.

Pacheco rushes for 4 yards on first down, then gets 3 more on second down. Jones moves the chains with a 9-yard reception on third down to the Michigan 33.

Aaron Young rushes for 2 yards on first down. Vedral takes a shot down the sideline to Jones, but the ball is overthrown. The third-down throw to Jones, though, is complete for a gain of 9, and Rutgers has a first down at the Michigan 22 with 1:40 left in the game.

A false start penalty will make it first-and-15 at the Michigan 27.

Pacheco picks up 2 yards apiece on first and second down to bring up third-and-11, and Rutgers gets exactly what it needs with an 11-yard completion to Jones.

Michigan extends lead on Johnson's second receiving touchdown

Michigan takes over at the 15. The Wolverines lead 28-27 with 11:17 to go in the fourth quarter.

Cade McNamara throws incomplete to Ronnie Bell on first down. He hits Bell on second down, though, and the completion is good for 14 yards to the Michigan 29.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 6 yards on first down. Nick Eubanks catches it underneath, then bruises his way to a 7-yard gain on second down.

Now McNamara goes to his other tight end, hitting Erick All for a pickup of 6. Haskins moves the chains with a 6-yard pickup on second down to the Rutgers 46.

Haskins rushes for 5 yards on the next play, then Cornelius Johnson picks up a new set of downs with a 10-yard reception.

Charbonnet picks up 2 yards on first down and 8 more on second down to move the chains yet again.

Now Michigan goes back to Haskins, and he keeps the momentum going with a 12-yard run up the middle.

Cornelius Johnson reels in a bubble screen, catches a block, dances up the sideline, and has his second touchdown of the game as Michigan extends the fourth-quarter lead.

Michigan defense stands tall after gaining lead in fourth

Rutgers takes over at the 19 with a 28-27 deficit and 13:32 left in the game.

Noah Vedral's first-down pass is broken up by Gemon Green. Kay'Ron Adams rushes for 5 yards on second down. Vedral keeps the chains moving with a 14-yard completion to Aron Cruickshank to the Rutgers 38.

Vedral is sacked by Josh Ross for a loss of 11 on the next play. He gets 8 of it back on second down, then throws a 5-yard completion to Bo Melton on third down. Rutgers will have to punt.

Michigan takes over at its own 29. It trails Rutgers 27-21 with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. 

Cade McNamara hits Ronnie Bell for a pickup of 9 yards on first down. Zach Charbonnet picks up the first down with a 5-yard run that's supplemented by a personal foul assessed to Rutgers.

Michigan does go for it in fourth down, and it's a pretty good decision. McNamara finds Chris Evans for a 21-yard completion to the Rutgers 16. 

McNamara gets popped while throwing a completed pass to Ronnie Bell that's good for 10 yards and another Michigan first down.

McNamara can't complete a first-down throw to Ben Mason, but he doesn't miss to Mike Sainristil on a slant route that goes for a touchdown.

Quinn Nordin's extra point gives Michigan its first lead of the game.

Rutgers goes three-and-out late in third quarter

Rutgers takes over at the 21. The Scarlet Knights lead 27-21 with 3:22 to go in the third.

Bo Melton drops the first-down pass. Noah Vedral throws out of bounds on second down. Shameen Jones hauls in a 6-yard pass on third down, completing the three-and-out.

Michigan punts it away with chance to take first lead of game

Michigan takes over at its own 26. The Wolverines trail 27-21 with 5:53 to go in the third.

Cade McNamara on first down hits Erick All for a completion of 1 yard. Blake Corum rushes for 9 yards on second down, moving the chains.

Corum goes for 2 yards on the next play. A false-start penalty makes it second-and-13 at the Michigan 33. Avery Young absolutely levels All on a second-down pass attempt and forces an incompletion. Now Michigan takes a delay-of-game penalty. It's third-and-19.

Injury alert: Michigan S Brad Hawkins was hurt on the play and is being tended to by the training staff.

Isaih Pacheco is stopped for no gain on first down. Rutgers is flagged for holding on the next play, making it second-and-19: Vedral will scramble, evade a sack, head toward the sideline, and get out a 32-yard completion to Shameen Jones.

Vedral goes to Aron Cruickshank on his next two throws for completions of 9 and 5 yards, respectively. First down, Rutgers, at the Michigan 27.

McNamara gets Michigan offense rolling in third quarter

Blake Corum returns the kickoff to Michigan's 41-yard-line. The Wolverines trail 24-14 with 13:42 in the third quarter.

Hassan Haskins rushes for 9 yards on first down, then picks up 3 on the next play to move the chains.

Cade McNamara's first pass of the half is complete, but for a loss of 2, to Giles Jackson. Cornelius Johnson can't come down with a deep throw on second down. McNamara throws into a tight window to Erick All on third down, a completion of 14 yards to the Rutgers 35.

Haskins picks up 25 yards on the next play, and Michigan has a balanced attack in a groove for the first time this game.

He then completes a 4-yard throw to Johnny Langan. Vedral on second down rushes for 2 yards, bringing up third-and-4. Vedral completes the third-down throw, but it's for no gain.

Pregame

Michigan will try to end a three-game slide when it takes on Rutgers on Saturday night.

The Wolverines (1-3) have not won a game since their season opener at Minnesota, a stretch that includes losses to in-state rival Michigan State and their first loss to Indiana since 1987.

Linebacker Cameron McGrone and Michigan take on Rutgers on Saturday night.

Likewise, the Scarlet Knights lug a three-game losing streak into Saturday night's contest, not having won since their season opener at Michigan State.
