Detroit City FC's U.S. Open Cup run ends in extra time at hands of FC Cincinnati

Detroit City FC saw its valiant U.S. Open Cup run crumble within a six-minute span during extra time Wednesday, losing to FC Cincinnati 4-1 at Gettler Stadium.

Emery Welshman finished with a hat trick for Cincinnati, his second goal in the 99th minute of the extra session proving a dagger for the visitors who had battled the United Soccer League second division club to a 1-1 stalemate in regulation. Corben Bone's goal for FC Cincinnati three minutes into extra time broke the deadlock but Welshman's strike into the upper roof of the net was the back-breaker.

Welshman completed his hat trick in the 110th minute, eliminating the National Premier Soccer League side after the Le Rouge had defeated the Premier Development League Michigan Bucks 5-4 on penalty kicks in the first round to settle a 1-1 draw last week.

Shawn Lawson opened the scoring with a goal in the 31st minute, depositing a pass from Danny Deakin who made a surging run into traffic on the left flank to complete the play. The DCFC lead was short-lived.

DCFC conceded an ill-advised corner, which FC Cincinnati's Forrest Lasso nodded across the goalmouth for Welshman to head past Le Rouge netminder Nate Steinwascher to level the match 1-1 four minutes later.

Detroit hosts Germany's FC St. Pauli in a friendly on Saturday at Keyworth Stadium. Kickoff is 6.
