Nolan Out Loud: Equity vs. equality

FILE - In this July 13, 2020, file photo, a black lives matter mural is visible in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington.

There's a difference between the civil rights movement and today's social justice movement, explains Patrice Onwuka on today's editorial page.

Civil rights activists were fighting for equality, a level playing field for everyone and a removal of racist barriers that denied individuals the opportunity to reach their potential.

Social justice advocates want equity, guaranteed outcomes for everyone regardless of individual merit.

Onwuka, of the Independent Women's Forum, predicts Black Lives Matter and other social justice groups won't achieve the success of  their civil rights forebears.

Where's the flu?

Knock on wood, but I haven't had a cold all winter, and certainly not the flu. And neither have most people. Health experts say the influenza, which typically kills 50,000 to 60,000 Americans a year, has all but disappeared. They suspect social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing to combat COVID-19 infections are the reason. And that suggests that despite the constant harping from their elected officials, Americans are complying with virus precautions.

Tater man

For a few hours on Thursday, Mr. Potato Head lost his taters. Hasbro announced in the morning the iconic toy was losing the "Mr." portion of his name in favor of the gender neutral Potato Head. But a few hours later, he got his spuds back. He'll still be Mr. Potato Head, and Mrs. Potato will retain her honorific as well. Only the packaging will be renamed.

ETC.

Further proof of the partisan nature of the #metoo movement comes with the lack of reaction from liberal women to the accusations that Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed a top female aide.

Left-wing media vilified Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis when he didn't follow the herd and shut down his state to fight COVID. But a City Journal report says Florida fared better or no worse than most states health-wise, and much better in terms of economic performance.
