A teen died Tuesday night in a crash after allegedly fleeing authorities in west Michigan, state police said.

A Barry County Sheriff's deputy unsuccessfully tried to stop the 16-year-old for excessive speed on Coats Road, west of M-66, in Castleton Township, the Michigan State Police Fifth District announced in a post on X.

The deputy pursued the driver at high speeds until his car went off the road and crashed into multiple trees, according to MSP Wayland Post troopers investigating the incident.

Emergency responders transported the teen to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, the X post stated.

Investigators do not know if the Woodland resident was using alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

Other details were not released Wednesday.
