One man dead, another in stable condition after stabbing, shooting at Detroit steakhouse

Detroit — A man is dead and another is in stable condition after an incident at a downtown steakhouse early Sunday, according to Detroit police.

Cpl. Dan Donakowski, a spokesman for the department, told The Detroit News that preliminary information showed an employee of Prime + Proper steakhouse got into an altercation with the suspect at about 12:10 a.m.

The suspect, identified as a man in his 50s, allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the employee. The employee, 51, then allegedly pulled out a weapon and fired shots, hitting the suspect.

Justin Near, a spokesman for the group that owns Prime + Proper, said the employee is in stable condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital following emergency surgery. The suspect died, Donakowski confirmed.

Near said the employee worked for a third-party security contractor working at Cash Only, the restaurant's exclusive bar with a no-phones rule and a hidden entrance.

"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred just after midnight on January 16 at Cash Only involving a guest and an employee of our third-party security contractor," Near said. "We are working closely with authorities and have provided them with all security camera footage to assist in the investigation."

No other injuries were reported. The department is not releasing other information on the men as of early Sunday afternoon.

Prime + Proper, located at the intersection of Griswold and State streets in downtown Detroit, is an upscale steakhouse. It is closed Sunday following the incident.

"(Grief) counseling is being made available to those affected as we navigate this tragedy, and we encourage anyone with information to contact the Detroit Police Department," Near said.
