Kresge looks to share $2M with Detroit nonprofits

The Kresge Foundation is looking to allocate $2 million to nonprofit groups in Detroit that focused on revitalizing the city’s neighborhoods.
The money is available for 15-20 groups and supports a third round of the Kresge Innovative Projects: Detroit — a $5 million pilot program launched in 2014.
The first two rounds of the program distributed $3 million, which included 19 planning and 20 implementation grants.
Kresge said the projects must be completed within 18 months after receiving the money and can be supplemented with other money.
Kresge will be looking for projects that have a transformative impact on a neighborhood, offer broad engagement of the neighborhood, and benefit a broad set of stakeholders and community residents, particularly low-income residents and people of color.
“This initiative has been successful because of the knowledge, know-how and dedication of residents and leaders across Detroit’s neighborhoods,” said George C. Jacobsen, senior program officer of the Kresge Foundation’s Detroit Program.
“We continue to learn from the grantees we’ve funded over the first two rounds about what it takes to make a tangible difference in city neighborhoods as well as how we might continue to support their ability to catalyze further efforts in building stronger neighborhoods.”
Some of the projects completed in the program include exercise pocket parks in central Detroit, park development and sculpture installation in North Corktown-Briggs, and the renovation of a vacant building to allow the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program to mentor more young people.
Kresge will accept online applications until Nov. 21. Recipients will be announced in March 2017.

The first session will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Jam Handy, 2900 E. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. The second is set for 1-3 p.m. Nov. 15 at TechTown, 440 Burroughs St. in Detroit.
