Socially conscious artisans, music mix at the Mercantile

HGTV TV personality Emily Henderson is known for her exquisite taste (I adore her book “Styled.”) Now, Henderson is lending her keen eye to the Mercantile, a first-of-its-kind shopping experience on Oct. 16 at Eastern Market, 3434 Russell Street. More than 25 vendors, all curated by Henderson, will sell a mix of socially conscious goods, including picture frames and terrarium cases made from reclaimed wood and glass and jewelry made from Detroit graffiti. “The goal for the Mercantile is to create a sustainable marketplace that travels around the country celebrating brands and socially conscious entrepreneurs that are making an impact in their communities and around the world,” said Mercantile proprietor Matthew Ford. The event, which runs from 2-8 p.m. also will include music by the Shadowboxers. Artisans include Rebel Nell, Mutual Adoration, Beard Balm, Lead Head Glass and more. Tickets are $15 in advance and $22 at the door and includes entertainment, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Gorman’s Warehouse sale runs Saturday, Sunday

Gorman’s Homes Furnishings and Interior Design is hosting its annual fall warehouse sale this weekend with sofas, bedroom, mattresses, rugs and more marked down 40 to 70 percent. It’s Show-time at Leon & Lulu’s new store

It’s time for the Show. Clawson retailer Leon & Lulu has officially opened their new store, the Show, after more than two years of renovations. The 8,700-square-foot store, located in a 1941 movie theater, features a wide range of products made in Michigan, greeting cards, custom framing and, of course, furniture. The Show, 116 W. 14 Mile, is open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

New Art Van fall catalog now in stores

Art Van Furniture’s new 63-page fall catalog hit stores Thursday and it features a familiar face: Nigel Barker. The celebrity photographer and former reality show judge, who is friends with Art Van founder Art Van Elslander, is debuting his new exclusive furniture collection with the Warren-based retailer. It hits stores on the same day as the catalog release. Barker isn’t to the Art Van catalog. He photographed it four years ago. Barker has been very hands-on in the creation of his new globally-influenced collection, meeting with designers to seeing prototypes. And some of the pieces are based on furniture in Barker’s own home, where he describes his style as a mix of ecletic and traditional. “People like to have ecletic” furniture pieces “that remind them of places and take them on journeys,” said Barker. “The collection is based on this idea.”

‘This Old House’ new season with Detroit angle premieres Saturday

The 37th season of PBS’s award-winning “This Old House” premieres Friday on Detroit’s WTVS with the renovation of a home in Arlington, Massachusetts, but come next year a home in Detroit’s Russell Woods neighborhood will take center stage. Starting in late March, the show will follow the renovation of what was once an abandoned two-story home owned by the Detroit Land Bank Authority as it is brought back to life by former Detroit firefighter Frank Polk and his wife, Tamiko. Projects include installing a new roof, kitchen and baths, plus new mechanicals to replace vandalized equipment. They’ll also restore historical details such as leaded stain glass windows and archways. The Detroit portion of the season will span 10 episodes. The premiere airs at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and again Saturday. “This Old House” plans to announce a second Detroit-based project this fall, according to a press release.
