MOT’s new season announced

Operas about Negro League baseball and the salons of 1920s Paris, Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro,” and a recital by epic soprano Kathleen Battle will jazz up the coming season at the Michigan Opera Theatre.
The company’s 47th season will comprise Verdi’s “Rigoletto" (Oct. 14-22), Mozart’s “Figaro” (Nov. 11-19), “27” by Ricky Ian Gordon (March 10), Puccini’s “Tosca” (April 7-15) and the tribute to a black baseball star, “The Summer King” by Daniel Sonenberg (May 12-20).
And for one night only, Battle — perhaps opera’s most famous soprano, and one who got her start with MOT in 1975 — will return to Detroit for a rare solo recital Nov 5.
Highlights of the Dance Series will include the Ballet Hispánico (Oct. 28-29), and the American Ballet Theatre’s “Romeo & Juliet” (Feb. 8-11), presented in collaboration with Ann Arbor’s University Musical Society.
In June, MOT founder and Artistic Director David DiChiera will step into an emeritus role. The company’s principal conductor, Stephen Lord, will take over for two years while the board searches for DiChiera’s successor.
