Restaurants, chefs in Detroit, Dearborn and beyond named on James Beard semifinalist list
The semifinalist list for the 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards dropped Wednesday, and it was brimming with local names.
Thirteen Southeastern Michigan chefs and restaurants both new and well-established were listed in national and regional categories, some for the first time. Here they are, starting with the national categories. Most of these semifinalist nominations are out of a list of 20, except Best New Restaurant, which is a list of 30.
Outstanding Restaurateur: Hamissi Mamba and Nadia Nijimbere of Baobab Fare, 6568 Woodward, Detroit
Outstanding Restaurant: Selden Standard, 3921 Second, Detroit
Emerging Chef: Rocky Coronado of Nepantla, 5410 Vernor Hwy., Detroit
Best New Restaurant: Alpino, 1426 Bagley, Detroit
Outstanding Bakery: Shatila Bakery, 14300 W. Warren, Dearborn
Outstanding Hospitality: AlTayeb Restaurant, 15010 W. Warren, Dearborn
Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages: Folk, 1701 Trumbull, Detroit and Spencer, 113 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor
Best Chef: Great Lakes
One of 12 regional categories, Best Chef: Great Lakes includes chefs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Twenty chefs were listed as semifinalists, including these local names:

Ji Hye Kim, Miss Kim, 415 N. Fifth, Ann Arbor
Dan Klenotic, Bellflower, 209 Pearl, Ypsilanti

John Yelinek, Ladder 4 Wine Bar, 3396 Vinewood, Detroit
