Better Made to get a new sign after 70 years

After about 70 years, Better Made potato chip factory in Detroit is getting a new sign.

The old sign, which was erected when the company moved to its current home on Gratiot, will be taken down at 10 a.m. Wednesday. A new sign will go up on Monday.

A rendering of the new sign shows the size and shape will largely stay the same, but the new bright red sign will say “Special – since 1930” instead of “Guest Quality Potato Chips.” The new sign will have keep company’s “maid” woman on top.

History buffs can take solace in the news that the 1940s sign will be hung inside the potato chip plant at 10148 Gratiot in Detroit. The original factory was founded in 1930 as Cross and Peters.

“This is certainly a momentous occasion in Better Made’s history,” president Mark Winkelman said in a press release. “Just like the Vernors, Stroh’s, and Sanders signs I’m sure there are people with many memories of seeing that sign over the years, maybe using it as a waypoint as they traveled down Gratiot Avenue. We look forward to seeing it displayed in our facility.”

Besides chips, the snack food company – which uses locally-grown potatoes – also makes popcorn, pretzels, pork rinds and wearable merchandise.
