Late night nosh: Where to dine downtown after 10 p.m.

Every booming metropolis has late night haunts to feed night owls, party people and those who work evening shifts.

In Detroit, the options for late night dining have expanded beyond our beloved twin coney businesses — Lafayette and American Coney Islands — although they are still pillars of comfort food for locals and visitors.

From the hip new spots to classic dives, here is a sampling of where to eat in and around downtown Detroit after 10 p.m. Most places don’t serve grub past bar hours (2 a.m.) but some, like Niki’s and New Parthenon serve food later, particularly on the weekends.

Downtown

Standby: Opened in late 2015, Standby is known for its elaborate and well-organized cocktail list. The booze flows until 2 a.m. and the kitchen serves until midnight daily. Get a classic cheeseburger with gourmet fries ($13) or risotto with butternut squash, oyster mushrooms and fontina cheese ($14). Owner-partner Joe Robinson says the menu changes often. Checker Bar: This colorful casual mainstay serves burgers, beers and more until 2 a.m. daily. The menu includes a selection of eight signature burgers or a sandwich, hot dog and desserts. A menu of bar snacks includes deviled eggs, chips and salsa or just a plate of bacon. Also available are video games and Thursday night karaoke. 124 Cadillac Square. (313) 961-9249. Wright & Co.: Helmed by James Beard Award semifinalist chef Marc Djozlij and partner Dave Kwiatkowskiis, owner of the Sugar House, this upper level stunner is popular with the late-evening crowd. Dishes like roasted beets, tuna tartare, and cheese plates are perfect for sharing. 1500 Woodward, Floor 2. (313) 962-7711. Kitchen open 4-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs. and 4 p.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. Bar is open until 2 a.m. Brunch is served 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays.

Anchor Bar: This casual spot is full of history and is almost always open and serving bar burgers and daily entree specials. 450 Fort. (313) 964-9127. Kitchen and bar open 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Sat. and noon-2 a.m. Sun.

Grand Trunk Pub: This craft beer hub serves better-than-average bar food that leans toward Irish fare. 612 Woodward. (313) 961-3043. Kitchen open 11 a.m.-midnight Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-midnight Sat.-Sun. Bar is open until 2 a.m. daily.

Sweetwater Tavern: Known for their chicken wings, this casual bar and restaurant has steaks, seafood, sandwiches, fried bar snacks and salads, including a satisfying Cobb salad. It’s not uncommon to see musicians performing at the nearby St. Andrew’s Hall snacking on wings before their show. 400 E. Congress. (313) 962-2210. Kitchen open 11 a.m.-1:30 a.m. daily.

Niki’s Pizza: Known for Detroit-style deep dish pizza and Greek specialties, this is a hot spot for weekend revelers who need to fill up the tank after a night of partying. 735 Beaubien. (313) 961-4303. Open 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Sun.-Thurs. and 10 a.m.-4 a.m. Fri.-Sat. (Nearby Loco’s Tex-Mex Grille, 454 Lafayette, keeps the same hours.)

Greektown: Several bars and restaurants on Monroe Street stay open late, even on weekdays. Fishbone’s, 400 Monroe, serves sushi until 11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., midnight Fri.-Sat. and 10 p.m. Sun. The dinner menu of Louisiana-inspired dishes is available slightly later. Five Guys Burgers and Fries, 508 Monroe, is open until 2 a.m. daily except Sunday (10 p.m.). The New Parthenon Restaurant, 547 Monroe, is open 11 a.m.-3 a.m. daily. This popular 24-hour spot, Plaka, 535 Monroe, is currently closed for remodeling.

Also Downtown:Lafayette Coney Island, 118 W. Lafayette, is open 9 a.m.-3 a.m. daily, and until 4 a.m. Fri.-Sat.; American Coney Island, 114 W. Lafayette, is open 24 hours; Townhouse Detroit, 500 Woodward, keeps its kitchen open until midnight Fri.-Sat.; Mexican cafe Hot Taco, 2233 Park, is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. Dining, drinking and recreation hangout Punch Bowl Social, 1331 Broadway, is open until 2 a.m. daily and serves food until around midnight weekdays, 1 a.m. weekends and 10 p.m. Sun.

Corktown

Katoi: Music, lighting and general ambiance are not an afterthought here. The Thai-inspired dinner menu goes until 11 p.m. Thurs.-Sat., and a late night menu is available featuring whatever the chefs feel like creating for the witching hour. The bartenders also offer specials, including beer and whiskey pairings. Because Katoi is so popular, there is often a wait around dinner time. 2520 Michigan. Red Corridor: This new blue collar joint opened late last year where Casey’s Pub was. 1830 Michigan, Detroit. (313) 285-8591. Open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. Kitchen is closing around midnight for now, but may stay open later in the future.

PJ’s Lager House: This live music venue offers a mix of bar food, salads, burgers and New Orleans-inspired dishes from its kitchen. 1254 Michigan. (313) 961-4668. 3 p.m.-2 a.m. Mon.-Wed., 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Thurs.-Fri. and 10:30 a.m.-2 a.m. Sat.-Sun. Kitchen is open until midnight daily, with brunch offerings 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat.-Sun.

Mercury Burger Bar: Burgers, hot dogs, tots, some of the best poutine in town and a full bar. 2163 Michigan. (313) 964-5000. 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs. and 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Fri.-Sat.

Gold Cash Gold: Full menu, which is crafted by executive chef Brendon Edwards, is available until 10 p.m. Tues.-Thurs. and midnight Fri.-Sat. Closed Mondays. 2100 Michigan. (313) 242-0770.

Midtown / Cass Corridor

Grey Ghost Detroit: This new-ish Brush Park bar and restaurant describes itself as meat-centric and serves cured meats like smoked whitefish and fried bologna, as well as premium cuts dry aged rib eye and flat iron steak. The full dinner menu is served until 10 p.m. Sun.-Thurs. and 11 p.m. Fri.-Sat. A late-night menu features a combo that includes a burger, fries, shot of whiskey and a can of Hamm’s for $18. 47 Watson. (313) 262-6534.

The Peterboro: This venue debuted last year bringing Chinese food back to Cass Corridor. Chef de cuisine Brion Wong has crafted a menu featuring American-style classics like almond boneless chicken and a list of small plates. 420 Peterboro. (313) 833-1111. Kitchen and bar open 5-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., 5 p.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. and 4-11 p.m. Sun.

Jolly Pumpkin: The Detroit outpost of this Michigan brewer serves gourmet bar food like truffle fries, chicken wings, nachos, curried potato chips, plus sandwiches and pizzas. Vegan and vegetarian options are plentiful. Food and drinks are ordered at the counter, and drinks served only at the bar. Honest John’s Bar & Grill: Although under new ownership since 2015, this no-nonsense bar and restaurant hasn’t changed much in 20 years, and nearly everything on the menu is still under $10. 488 Selden. (313) 832-5646. Open 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Mon.-Sat. and 9 a.m.-2 a.m. Sun.

Also in Midtown: Craft beer bar HopCat Detroit, 4265 Woodward, is open 11 a.m.-midnight Mon.-Wed., 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 10 a.m.-midnight Sun. Kitchen stays open until about a half hour before closing. Inside the Garden Bowl, 4120 Woodward, Sgt. Pepperoni’s Pizzeria & Deli serves 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. The Bronx Bar, 4476 Second, is known for its burgers and the kitchen is open until midnight daily. Detroit 1 Coney Island, 3433 Woodward, is 24 hours.

Southwest

Los Galanes: Taqueria and restaurant is known for its Latin dance nights on the weekends. 3362 Bagley. (313) 554-4444. Open until 11 p.m. and until 1 a.m. Fri.-Sat.

Armando’s: This longstanding Mexican restaurant with a full bar and spacious dining room is known for being open late. 4242 W. Vernor. (313) 581-0951. Open 10:30 a.m.-midnight Mon.-Wed., 10:30 a.m.-2 a.m. Thurs. and Sun. and 10:30 a.m.-4 a.m. Fri.-Sat.

Taqueria El Nacimiento: Named the Spanish word for nativity scene, this restaurant serves a bounty of traditional Mexican food, plus Americanized items like those giant margaritas with tiny Coronona beers stuck in them. 7400 W. Duly’s Place: Considered to be the third in the holy trinity of local coneysDuly’s in Southwest is widely loved and always open. 5458 W. Vernor Hwy. (313) 554-3076.

On the outskirts

Lou’s Deli: Known for huge sandwiches, this deli chain has been serving Detroit for decades. 8220 W. McNichols. (313) 861-1321. Open 10 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Mon.-Tues., 10 a.m.-3:30 a.m. Fri.-Sat. and noon-1 a.m. Sun. Additional locations with similar hours at 19440 W. Seven Mile and 22819 Greenfield in Southfield.
